5 Ways to Improve Safety on the Site

5 Ways to Improve Safety on the Site
Posted: 5th July 2019

Construction sites are one of the most dangerous places to work. Whilst most manage risk assessments and accident prevention effectively, accidents can happen.

Here are five ways to improve safety on construction sites.

#1 Protect Against Falling, Slipping and Tripping

Thousands of accidents involving slipping or tripping happen in the construction industry every year. With the main causes being wet and uneven surfaces and cables or other obstacles. To avoid this, workplaces must be managed more effectively.

Falling from a height can cause major injury or even death and is one of the biggest killers in the workplace. Use guardrails, safety nets and fall-arrest equipment to help prevent workplace fatalities.

#2 Protect from Dust

Many construction site tasks generate high amounts of dust and there are significant health risks associated with breathing air contaminated by dust or fumes. Fresh air when working in confined spaces is key and a specialist can advise on what type of equipment is needed, which is typically some type of ducting and air flow system. Always ensure the workplace is properly ventilated. Check out the range of respiratory protection available at Work & Wear Direct.

#3 Protect from Strain Injuries

There is a lot of lifting and pushing of heavy objects and handling of industrial machinery in construction, putting workers at risk of repetitive strain injuries. Consider using machinery to do any heavy lifting and if manual handling is an absolute must then ensure that all workers are properly trained.

#4 Protect from Noise

Construction site noise is often excessive and excessive noise can lead to hearing loss. If noise levels reach over 85 decibels then adequate hearing protection must be provided. There are also extra steps you can take to protect both the workforce and the public, including the use of acoustic barriers and noise absorbent materials.

#5 Protect from Cold

Cold temperatures are one of the harshest working conditions to endure. With conditions including shivering and numbness, severe cold is even known to cause heart attacks. There is no legal minimum temperature for working outdoors so always provide adequate heating and follow safe work practices on site.
