A Guide to Electrical Safety in the Workplace

A Guide to Electrical Safety in the Workplace
Posted: 2nd June 2022

Electricity is dangerous. It can cause significant damage to property, severe injuries and in the worst case scenario kill someone. If you work with, or near, electricity there are some safety precautions that should be followed to significantly reduce the risk of electrical injury.

How can I find out if my electrical equipment is safe?

You can find out if your electrical equipment is safe by carrying out inspection and testing checks. The level of inspection and testing required is relevant to the associated risks. For example, if your electrical equipment has been stored and used in a clean and dry environment, then a visual inspection is typically suitable.

How often should my electrical equipment be checked?

To make a decision on how often each piece of equipment should be checked, it needs to be often enough that it is unlikely the equipment will become unsafe between each check. When the equipment has been inspected accordingly, write down the results. According to the number of faults found, you can then make an informed decision on how often you need to carry out inspection and testing checks.

How can I check that my specialised electrical equipment is safe?

The  easiest way to find out if any specialised equipment that is being used in the workplace is safe, is to have it inspected and tested by a person with specific competence of that type of equipment. Usually, electrical goods manufacturers have their own authorised repair services which are chosen for their competence to inspect and check the safety of this type of equipment.

What are electrical safety signs used for?

Electrical safety signs are an important part of workplace safety when working with electrical equipment as they are used to help indicate any hazards or risks. At Work and Wear Direct we sell a large range of electrical safety signs and tags to warn employees of electrical hazards in the workplace that they should be aware of. Our range of electrical safety signs includes high voltage signs, electrical hazard signs and more.
