Keeping Safe in the Workplace with Safety Signs

Keeping Safe in the Workplace with Safety Signs
Posted: 23rd May 2022

There are many things to remember when it comes to keeping safe in the workplace. Different industries, and even different areas of the same business, may require different safety procedures and equipment. This is why site safety signs are vital.

Site safety signs offer both employees, and members of the public, clear safety information hung around the workplace. Using the science of how symbols, colours and shapes are interpreted by us, safety signs become immediately recognisable and contain easy to digest information.

Some safety symbols have been used for thousands of years and are universally recognised, whilst others are more modern, such as fire exit signs and first aid signs. Safety signs are covered by legislation regarding colours and fonts. The biggest challenge that faces designers of these safety signs is to ensure that it is clear what the symbols mean in order to have the greatest effect and help prevent accidents in the workplace from occurring.

On a construction site, depending on the nature of the construction, you may need a range of signs, such as No Unauthorised Entry, Safety Helmets Must Be Worn, Danger Keep Out and a range of other site specific hazard warnings. In other industries, blue informational safety signs such as 'Fire Door Keep Shut' serve an important purpose. In this instance it successfully conveys the message that the door serves a purpose of protecting a fire escape route and providing an emergency exit.

Conducting a proper health and safety audit of the business will help you to find out what safety signage is required. When purchasing safety signs, consider where they will be located and any environmental conditions or risk of vandalism. Some safety signs have a legal minimum requirement, but generally they must be at a readable distance and at eye-level.

Remember that when it comes to site safety, your responsibility does not stop with safety signs. They exist to reinforce safe working practices and not to replace them.
