PPE & Signage for Waste and Recycling

PPE & Signage for Waste and Recycling
Posted: 5th January 2023

Waste and recycling are one of the many areas vulnerable to infection from contaminants and bacteria. There is also a high risk of punctures and lacerations to any PPE. If you run a recycling plant then you need to be aware of the safety measures required and follow the guidelines provided by the authorities for occupational risks and hazards. It is also important that employers train their employees to use PPE.

Every industry produces different types of waste. Waste with sharp edges can cause injuries that can grow into infections. There may also be instances when employees come across hazardous liquids while cleaning. Therefore, the first step towards buying PPE for your workforce has to involve the identification of the risks and hazards that can be associated with the waste and recycling process.

The PPE provided should offer all the required protection. The details provided by the manufacturer should be studied by the employer and the PPE should be readily available as it can become easily damaged, increasing the risk of harmful exposure.

The size and fit of the PPE provided is also very important. One size fits all is not the case. A loose fit allows for contamination and tight-fitting PPE can easily tear or break giving way to the contaminants.

If you are an employer, you must choose PPE that is UKCA marked (or CE marked in specific circumstances). PPE should also have a Declaration of Conformity and instructions on how to use the item. Suppliers can advise you.

A thorough inspection of the PPE should be carried out before and after using it, checking for any signs of contamination or damage. You should check for defects such as perforations or discoloration and check for any expiry dates on the PPE. Specialist equipment may need to be sent back to the manufacturer if maintenance is required.Take care of the PPE at all times and clean after use. Repair or replace damaged or broken PPE straight away.

At Work & Wear Direct we stock a range of PPE and instructional PPE signs often used in warehouses and factories, that give employees and visitors a clear message by dictating when, where and which types of PPE should be worn in the workplace. All of our PPE products are high quality and are CE marked in accordance with the Personal Protective Equipment Regulations of 2002. We also supply a range of recycling signage which all feature highly recognised recycling signs and symbols and are suitable for most workplace environments.
