As a result of Brexit, The UK Government has introduced a new standard, the UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) mark. The UK Conformity Assessed mark is a new mandatory mark on a product that signals that it conforms to UK legislation.
PPE sold in Great Britain is currently marked with the CE symbol. This will be replaced with a new symbol that will be used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain. Some exceptions are construction products and medical devices. More information has been published on the Gov website about these.
According to the Gov website, the UKCA mark is a new UK product marking that is being used for goods that are placed on the market in Great Britain. Most products that are currently covered under the regulations and directives for CE marking will now fall under the new UK Conformity Assessed marking.
The UK Conformity Assessed marking is not recognised on the EU market as products for sale in the EU must carry a CE marking. If a product is intended for both markets the product should now carry both markings.
Many of the differences between the UKCA and CE markings are administrative and reflect that the new mark only applies in the UK and only requires information in English, simplifying aspects such as which language applies and where the product’s technical information must be kept.
The UK Conformity Assessed mark came into effect on 1 January 2021. However, to allow businesses time to adjust to the new requirements, they are still able to use the current CE marking until 1 January 2023. CE marking will continue to be recognised for products placed on the market in EU27 countries.
