Where to Hang Safety Signs on Site?

Where to Hang Safety Signs on Site?
Posted: 3rd July 2022

Construction site safety signs offer protection on site and can indicate things such as when and where a specific type of PPE, such as safety helmets or safety boots must be worn. Most safety signs don’t require too much attention and can be easily identified. Site safety signs must be used by law if there is a hazard present on site that can be protected against by using PPE.

If a safety sign is blue and white, this indicates that the required PPE is mandatory. Other colours signs that you might see are yellow triangles, which indicate a warning and red with a slash mark, such as a “no smoking” sign, which indicates that something is prohibited. Green signs are used to indicate a safe condition such as a fire exit sign or first aid equipment.

All safety signs must be observed and blue PPE signs must always be placed in a highly visible location, usually attached to a larger “Site Safety” sign and placed at the entrance of the site, indicating what PPE must be worn in order to enter the site, sometimes the names of the items will be listed next to or underneath for clarification.

Conducting a proper health and safety audit of the business will help you to find out what safety signage is required. When purchasing safety signs, consider where they will be located and any environmental conditions or risk of vandalism. Some safety signs have a legal minimum requirement, but generally they must be at a readable distance and at eye-level.

Everyone entering the site must be wearing all of the PPE that the sign indicates to safeguard them from any potential hazards and employers are required to explain all safety signs if they are unfamiliar to employees.

Remember that when it comes to site safety, your responsibility does not stop with safety signs. They exist to reinforce safe working practices and not to replace them.
