Flame Retardant Protection

Flame Retardant WorkwearIf you work in a hazardous environment with fire then you should ensure that you wear the correct flame retardant workwear. It plays an important role in many industries including oil and gas, mining and manufacturing. Even if you work in an industry in which fires at work may not affect you, burn related injuries are still a common hazard. These types of fabrics will not be affected by intense heat, so are not likely to catch fire just from being near a flame. In high risk environments, wearing the correct fire retardant workwear will help to minimise injury. Getting it wrong could mean the difference between a minor accident and serious burns. All flame retardant workwear at Work & Wear Direct complies with EN ISO 11612 safety standards.

What is the difference between fire resistant and flame retardant?

The difference lies in how each type of fabric is made. Flame retardant means that a chemical substance has been added to materials during their manufacturing process in order to reduce the likelihood of the finished product catching fire and to slow down the combustion process.

Fire resistance is characterised as resisting ignition or self-extinguishing once the source of the ignition is removed. Fire resistant clothing will not qualify as fire resistant unless it is made of certain nonflammable fibres.
