Using Hand Tools Safely at Work

Using Hand Tools Safely at Work
Posted: 1st August 2022

Hand tool safety should be a bigger concern for various workplaces in the UK. Many types of business and tradesmen use different hand tools at work every day without considering the dangers involved.

Hand tools are non-powered. Yet common hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, knives, shears and saws are responsible for many injuries at work caused by improper use or maintenance. Regular maintenance of hand tools is essential in order to keep them in perfect working condition and avoid accidents. Employers are responsible for maintaining the condition of all hand tools used by employees and ensuring that the employees are trained in using the hand tools correctly. Employers must take adequate measures to mitigate any potential risks.

Inexperienced employees may lack the knowledge and understanding required as well as the safety risks involved. Before any work begins, all employees should receive comprehensive training on best practices.

Appropriate personal protective equipment such as safety goggles, safety gloves, safety helmets etc should always be worn due to the safety hazards that may be encountered while using hand tools. Many hand tools have sharp edges, but wearing cut resistant gloves can help to protect workers using sharp hand tools.

When carrying or transporting tools remember to use a toolbox or tool belt. Carry pointed or sharp tools with the pointed edge facing away from the body and do not carry tools by hand up ladders or lay tools down where people can trip on them or they can fall on someone.

Putting these safety protocols in place as well as using adequate safety signage in work areas will help to remind staff that there are simple but effective options to avoid hazards. Using the right tools in the right ways will reduce fatigue and increase productivity in the workforce. It will also improve the quality of work being produced along with reducing the risk of injuries or accidents.
